Wireless Networks might be the most vulnerable when it comes to security.


In a wireless network there are a number of settings and facilities that can be utilized to increase the level of security and reduce the possibility of your data or network being compromised.

  • Netwave® units are shipped in a default condition with a number of fields set with generic strings. The Administrator “Username” and “Password” strings should be changed to prevent unwanted access to the configuration and management interface of the devices.
  • The SSID (Service Set Identifier) is a name broadcast by the Access Point allowing Clients to detect and connect to that Access Point. The SSID transmission can be disabled meaning that a Client must be provide the SSID of the Access Point before it will connect to it.
  • To secure the traffic flowing across a wireless link, encryption techniques can be employed. At ComNet would advise the use of WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access) encryption running the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) cipher.
  • The Access Point can also be preloaded with allowable MAC addresses and then it will look to block all other. In either point-to-point or point-to-multipoint systems both the traffic flow of Client wireless units and their devices can be managed based on their associated MAC addresses.

EVENT RECAP: Advanced Solutions Conference – March 19 – 21, 2013 in Buffalo, NY

On March 19 – 21, around 200 resellers, Ingram Micro associates, and vendor partners gathered together at the Marriott Buffalo Niagara for Ingram Micro’s Advanced Solutions Conference. The theme of the event was Data and Information Management, focusing around the technologies of Data Center, Networking, and IT Security.

To kick off day 1 of the event, Microsoft hosted a training on the new Microsoft Office, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 suite of products. Then a happy hour followed in the hotel lobby bar sponsored by HP Networking. Everyone was then shuttled to the Welcome Reception at the nearby Seneca Niagara Casino for a time of food, drinks, and networking.

On the second day, 2013 SMB Market Trends was discussed and set the stage for the rest of the event. Attendees learned that the SMB market represents 44% of total IT spending worldwide or $920 billion worldwide in 2013 and that 6 million SMBs exist in the U.S., 65-70 million SMBs worldwide. By 2015, the SMB market is projected to cross the trillion dollar mark in IT spending.

Some suggested incremental revenue opportunities include Big Data/Analytics/Business Intelligence, Cloud Services, Digital Signage in various vertical spaces, BYOD, and VDI. (To learn more, register here to attend a webinar on 2013 SMB Trends on Tuesday, April 16 –
CompTIA Vertical Markets presentation IBM and Juniper Networks also gave keynote presentations on Big Data and Security solutions. The “Get to Know Ingram Micro” panel was also a hit in which expert representatives within Ingram Micro’s Cloud, Field Technical Consultants, Technical Support, Integration Services, Finance, and Sales departments had an open forum to educate resellers on Ingram Micro’s robust service offerings.

The afternoon continued on with breakout presentations from AddOn Computer, D-Link, Cisco, IBM, Microsoft, Netgear, Raritan, Red Hat, WatchGuard. Ingram Micro also presented on their Cloud service portfolio and the Emerging Vendors Initiative. The day concluded with a technology and demo fair in which reseller attendees were able to connect with vendor representatives and learn more about their products.
Tech Fair

On the final day of the conference, attendees heard from AVAD, CompTIA on How to Enter into New Vertical Markets, Ingram Micro Healthcare and Public Sector teams. Then reseller attendees were shuttled to the Buffalo Ingram Micro office to meet with their sales reps and participate in Solution Center trainings and tours. 

The 3 day conference was a jam packed event full of information around the SMB space, vertical markets, Big Data solutions, and Ingram Micro resources. Attendees walked away with a wealth of knowledge to bring back to colleagues and their customers.
