For some, there is a real misunderstanding between the realities of recovery metrics today and what we had just a few years ago. The Modern Data Center has had a number of positive things happen recently. Three of those key positive traits revolve around key investments in virtualization, advanced storage systems and everyone has a developing cloud strategy. However there is a growing demand for the services from the data center, an Always-On Business that has little tolerance for data loss. This is where the recovery discussion can address the misunderstandings that exist today.
There is a gap in what traditional solutions have offered for recovery time and point objectives. The misconceptions that can be dispelled for the Modern Data Center are as follows:
- Recovery Time and Point Objectives of 15 Minutes aren’t an option today for the bulk of the data center. Not true! High speed recovery can be met today for whole workloads and application critical data. Veeam brought Instant VM Recovery to the market in 2010 and has added application level restores to be able to recover items or whole VMs in just minutes.
- I can’t be sure I can recover if I really need it. A recovery strategy is made up of many ways to recover, and having ways out of a problem is key. It’s important for companies to know what kind of recovery options are available. For example, can the storage infrastructure be leveraged for recovery? Specifically, can a storage system snapshot be part of the recovery process? If so, can it be done with ease? Veeam Explorer for Storage Snapshots is a tool that companies can use for just that. The best part is that Veeam Explorer for Storage Snapshots is free!Additionally, what about recovery verification? Recovery verification is fundamentally different than backup verification. There are plenty of situations where a backup of a live workload as it is isn’t actually recoverable due to pending changes of the system(s) involved.The right data protection strategy today can ensure that companies are certain, without a doubt,
that every operating system will boot and that every application will run, every single time after a backup; and more so when recovery is needed.
- I can’t leverage my data protection strategy for anything else. Again, not true! Technologies such as virtual labs can leverage the data and workloads from the data protection strategy. When you think about what the data protection strategy has, it has a lot! It has the entire data center and is there when you need it to recover. But you also can use this working set or testing critical changes to avoid any additional risk.A specific example could be running a Tier-1 application with all of its components in an isolated virtual lab to test an upgrade that simply can’t be replicated in a development capacity much less in production. This exercise will reduce risk to the critical application and ensure that IT teams can make changes confidently in production. Not what you’d expect from a backup product historically!
These are just a few of the misconceptions of today, but surely there are more. If you haven’t seen innovation in your recovery strategies; you may be missing out. It may be time to take a closer look at a solution that is keen to deliver availability for your or your client’s Modern Data Center.
